Core Aeration
Lawn aeration is the removal of small plugs of soil from the lawn, leaving holes about ½ inch in diameter and up to 3 inches deep. The plugs of soil are left on the lawn surface to gradually break down into the turf.
Aeration is particularly beneficial when soil compaction is a problem. Compacted soils produce shallow rooted turf, which is very vulnerable to pests and environmental stress. Aeration also increases the absorption of water, oxygen, and fertilizer into the soil. Aeration helps control thatch build up by providing oxygen to the microorganisms that break down the thatch layer.
Aeration also improves turf drainage; growth of turf is stimulated, and increases the benefits of seeding, topdressing and fertilization.
The best time to Aerate a lawn is in late summer (September - November) when the weather is cool, and can be completed up until the ground is frozen. Core Aeration done each fall will maximize your lawns potential from year to year.
